Paphos in May
May is a great time to visit Paphos especially for those who enjoy the sunshine but don’t wish to endure searing heat. The days are pleasantly warm and you can enjoy the sunshine. Night time temperatures can fall slightly so long sleeved tops or light woollen garments are advised for the evenings.
May is also an excellent time for those who enjoy nature and the countryside around Paphos is full of colour as the flowers are in full bloom. Until the middle of May spring is in full force and it is a great time to go on many of the wonderful nature hikes that are available. Trekking through the Akamas Peninsula is also preferred during May as the weather is not too hot and overbearing.
Other great things to view during the month of May are of course all the natural wild flowers that grow in Cyprus. There are over 2,000 species of plants and flowers that grow in Cyrpus and most of these can be seen during the spring months. During the summer most of these flowers die off as the weather is too hot and dry.
For those interested in birds you can still view some of the 300 species of birds that stop at Cyprus during their migratory flights. May is the last month in spring that you can see these birds and some of the species include the Griffon Vulture and the Pochard.
May is the month when the flower festival is celebrated and here you can enjoy all the wonders of nature and enjoy some local culture too.
If you are holidaying in Paphos during the month of May you can still lie by the pool or at the beach and soak up the sun. You can also visit the historical ruins and museums that Paphos has to offer. The Tomb of the Kings and the Paphos Mosaics are beautiful at this time of the year as both have some amazing wild flowers growing around them during April and May.
From the middle of May right through until October the summer starts and temperatures begin to rise. The Troodos Mountains are however much cooler and are the ideal location for biking, hiking, or just relaxing and enjoying a quiet picnic. During May the waters of the Mediterranean are clear and warm enough to swim comfortably in and you don’t have the high temperatures that you endure during mid summer.
